Encuentro Latino
5 Minute Profile 1. Your name / aka Laucinda (Lossie) & Gareth Roberts (we're married) 2. When did you start dancing Salsa? Nov 1999 3. Why / how? Because we loved the music, the rhythms, the partnerwork, the styling, the lot! We took a few classes with local teachers & quickly moved on to train further afield & internationally. 4. When did you start teaching / performing / promoting Salsa? March 2000. 5. Why / how? Our passion for Salsa brought us in contact with some of the New York, Manchester, European and London based practitioners. We started to take private lessons with a few of the best teachers / performers including an Arts Council funded training programme with Frankie Martinez. We were greatly excited by what the students, exposed to that quality of teaching, had achieved and recognised the incredible potential of salsa to enrich and invigorate people’s lives. Our company Encuentro Latino was launched primarily out of a desire to give our existing students a better service and broaden the participation and popularity of salsa in the York region. 6. Is Salsa your only / main profession? If not what is? Mainly, but we have also trained as dancers at The London Studio Centre & The Northern School of Contemporary Dance, so we occassionally teach other styles such as stage dance for childrens productions or in schools, Samba, Contemporary & Street. 7. Do you have any Salsa role models / people who inspired you? Oh wow, there's so many. Fogarate, Hacha y Machete, Tropical Gem, Frankie Martinez & Abakua, Santo Rico, Kimberli Flores, Nancy Ortiz, Emma & Mushi, Kate & Gary and we could keep going but you'll run out of space! 8. What has been the best Salsa event you've ever attended? Why? El Flamingo in New York, Oct 04' because Spanish Harlem Orchestra were playing & Frankie organised for us to meet them & take some pictures, keep live music alive!!!!!! 9. What was the funniest / most embarassing Salsa moment? We were hired by one of our agents to do Salsa demo's every 10 minutes for an hour on a stage at the entrance to a shopping centre. It was so foggy that nobody could see us which really made us giggle & by the time the fog lifted towards the end of the hour there was one person watching, ahh showbiz! 10. Do you have any words of wisdom for the Salsa dancers out there? To all the beginners out there, don't give up, listen to salsa music regularly & try to go out social dancing as much as possible & you'll soon see why we all love it so much.
